Bowen - A Whole Body Experience

So what do you know about The Bowen Technique?
Brief History of Bowen

Developed in Australia in the 1950's by Tom Bowen, the Bowen Technique is a gentle form of holistic therapy that encourages the body to re-balance, realign and heal itself.

Re-balancing occurs both physically and mentally and relief can be provided from many everyday stresses, traumas, acute injury and long term chronic conditions.

Whilst it may appear to have certain aspects in common with some massage and "Acu-based" therapies, Bowen's approach results in physical changes in the body that are the result of the body fixing itself, rather than as a result of any physical manipulation or through imposing the will or physical intervention of the therapist into the ailment.

How does Bowen work?

During a treatment gentle moves usually applied with the fingers and thumbs "disturb" energy flows often resulting in a deep sense of relaxation allowing the body to begin its own repair processes.  Rather than attempting to diagnose and treat specific ailments, the Bowen therapist encourages the body to self-heal through a holistic approach, by creating small disturbances in the body's nervous systems.

Thomas Ambrose Bowen

Tom Bowen was reputed to have treated up to 13000 people in a single year in his home town of Geelong, near Melbourne South Australia.  People often travelled hundreds of miles to benefit from the therapy that was to become known as The Bowen Technique long after his death in 1982.

Tom was an intuitive and inspired individual who would simply read the bodies that presented themselves for help and apply whatever treatment he believed felt right.

What does Bowen involve?

Treatments usually last between 30 and 60 minutes and consist of a series of gentle rolling moves over connective tissue and fascia.  The moves are surprisingly powerful achieving maximum effect with minimal pressure.

The first treatment usually includes documenting a client's medical history to enable the therapist to understand the events and circumstances that may have led to them turning to Bowen in the first place.  The therapist is not there to diagnose since the treatment is holistic, not specific.

During the actual treatment there are frequent breaks between moves during which time you may be left alone unless you prefer the therapist to stay - a parent would always accompany young children.  These breaks allow the body to interpret the treatment and to respond.

Treatment is usually given through light clothing - garments may be loosened so the therapist can ensure accuracy and "read" what is being achieved.  No oils or appliances are used.

What is Bowen good for?

As well as initiating a deep state of relaxation that encourages the body to commence healing, the Bowen technique is also extremely effective for pain relief and as an effective remedial therapy for many ailments.  These include acute injuries and chronic conditions or illnesses such as, skeletal and muscular problems, allergies and hay-fever, asthma and respiratory symptoms, digestive and bowel symptoms, RSI, jaw and bite irregularities, migraine and headaches, back pain and sciatica, frozen shoulder, fatigue and sleep loss plus many more.

Applied as an asthma treatment, for migraine, back pain and frozen shoulder, Bowen has proven particularly effective.  Indeed each has been the subject of extensive projects and studies conducted by Bowen Therapists nationwide.

Rehabilitation from injury or surgical operation, regardless of how old or recent an ailment may be, has also been seen to accelerate through Bowen.

Some chronic and incurable illnesses have enjoyed relief and in some cases have shown improvement from using Bowen, including Parkinsons Disease, Stroke, MS (multiple sclerosis), ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis), CP (cerebral palsy) and muscular dystrophy.

What are the side effects from Bowen?

There are no adverse side effects from the use of the Bowen Technique.  Indeed, Bowen is known to enhance and complement conventional medicine and works well in conjunction with other complimentary therapies such as homeopathy, herbal medicine and flower essences.

What are the benefits?

There are very few contra-indications to the use of Bowen making it a truly beneficial therapy for both acute and chronic conditions alike.  Studies have also shown the Bowen Technique to enable deep relaxation, increase resistance to infection and to lower blood pressure.

Is Age a Barrier to Bowen?

Not at all - there are cases of Bowen being given to patients with ages ranging from new born babies to 90 year old pensioners, providing instant and long-term relief to their various ailments with no discomfort, minimal treatment and maximum benefit.
